Pure VSM

Pure VSM is a book in preparation. Its purpose is to present Beer’s
Viable System Model as he stated it: every claim about the model carries a
locator in Beer’s own texts — Brain of the Firm, The Heart of Enterprise,
Diagnosing the System for Organizations and the rest — so that later
interpretation, extension and critique can lean on a baseline they do not have to
re-argue.

Fidelity is the point, and the boundary is kept visible: what Beer wrote stays
separate from what others have read into it. The working draft runs to five parts and
twenty-seven chapters, from Beer’s cybernetics, through the model itself, its
applications and Team Syntegrity, to questions of method and epistemology. It is a
draft, not yet canon.

A stress test for the Viable System Model

The model has been used for five decades, but its applications rarely say in advance
what observation would count against a diagnosis — or what could make the model give
something up. The working paper argues that the problem is not a lack of criticism but
the absence of organised exposure to correction: adverse results are absorbed rather
than recorded as losses.

It proposes a five-field receipt protocol, a public evidence register run as a
Registered Reports track, and five demonstrations of how the programme can begin at low
cost. The argument moves across eight fields — from the object under test, through the
philosophy of science that supplies the method, to the neighbouring traditions and
sciences that provide the rival accounts — and each field has a two-part cheat sheet
alongside it.
